Post 81 defeats Belchertown

Post 81 entered today's game with a record of 4 and 1.  Belchertown came in without a victory.  It was a beautiful evening.  Clear blue skies and a cool summer evening feel.  Luke started the game at shortstop base and batting second.  That was a big change from batting eighth.  Our regular shortstop was gone, so I was eager to see how Luke would fare filling in.

In the first inning the lead off man for Belchertown reached on a high popup single that fell in no mans land in shallow center.  Actually he ended up on second.  The next batter hit a ground ball to Luke at SS.  The runner at second decided to run as the ball was put into play.  Luke knew the rule, when you are on second you hold on a ball hit to the left side.  Luke got the ball pivoted and threw on target to third, where our third baseman, Garret, tagged out the runner.  So now one out and a runner at first.  He then got picked off on the next pitch.  The next batter struck out.

Our first batter reached on an error by the third baseman.  Luke followed that by hitting a ball through the second baseman's legs.  After a single, we scored a run.  1 to 0 Post 81 ahead after one inning.

Luke came up in the third with the score still 1 - 0.  He hit a double in the right center gap.  He was very happy to get his second hit and his first extra base hit.  Slowly coming out of his slump.

Luke came up two more times.  A walk and a ground out to second.

By the fourth inning Post 81 had blown the game open on walks and a few key hits (but not many), the score was 8 to 0.

Luke had two more chances, one a routine ground out, and the other a double play ball to end the game.  He fielded the ball hit up the middle on the run, stepped on second and threw to first - game over.

A good game for the team and a performance that made Luke happy, just for steady improvement.

Luke is 2 for 12 (.166) and on base 5 for 14 (.357).
